Discovering Suvernova: enhancing arts and crafts

Suvernova: a project uniting art, craft and community in Suvereto.

In Suvereto there is a new energy pulsing strongly in the heart of the village: it is called SuverNova, an association that embraces art, crafts and creativity in all their facets. Born out of love for this area, this reality is destined to make its mark and enhance art and crafts in Suvereto.

The special connection with SuverNova

Paola and her husband, two of the founding partners of Suvernova, like me, have Florence in their hearts but have chosen Suvereto as their adopted home. From the moment I met them, I felt an immediate connection: not only do we share a passion for the beauty of handmade creations, but also a vision to make Suvereto a reference point for lovers of art and craftsmanship.

SuverNova’s project moves on two basic tracks: the enhancement of local crafts and the creation of a dynamic community that can grow through workshops, events and shared spaces. Planned activities include creative workshops, training sessions and the organization of exhibitions to give visibility to local talent.

This philosophy fits perfectly with my mission. Those who know me know how much I love craftsmanship, which I pursue with the creations of my shop Casa nel Castello and with my Country Relooking projects. I am in the process of renovating a fund right here in the hamlet, and I have already started dreaming about the spaces we could bring to life together with SuverNova and other artists through temporary shops, exhibitions and creative stencil workshops (my passion!) and many other possibilities that could open up with new collaborations.

Suvernova is an APS and part of the ARCI network, promoting exhibitions and events dedicated to crafts, images, music, literature, theater, fashion, design and other arts.

Indeed, the association aims to:
– Enhance local talent.
– Create a collaborative network between artists and artisans.
– Offer the community moments of encounter through classes, events and workshops.
– Bring new visitors and cultural interests to the village.

“I Am Julia”: a gesture against silence.

Last November 25, 2023, the tragic death of Giulia, a victim of domestic femicide, shook Suvereto deeply. Outrage and grief prompted Paola, Luigi, Angela, Miranda, Caterina and others to react, turning dismay into collective action.

Thus was born the flash mob “Giulia, don’t be silent for a minute,” a symbolic gesture to give voice to a tragedy that must not go unnoticed. The young women of Suvereto, united by a strong sisterhood, participated courageously, turning grief into an act of solidarity and awareness.

From this initiative and the ability to transform even the most difficult moments into opportunities for unity and reflection, SuverNova was born, by Paola, Luigi, Caterina, Sofia and Federico. We have already talked about Sofia here in the blog and soon I will introduce you to the other artists who are part of this reality.

A collective work for the village: the banner of SuverNova

One of the initiatives that made me fall in love with SuverNova was the creation of a collective work celebrating creativity and community spirit: a welcome tapestry affixed to Suvereto’s Porta del Borgo on the occasion of Artimborgo, which I already told you about in this blogpost.

This unique and imaginative banner was created using reclaimed materials-iron, plastic, reclaimed glass tiles, polychrome wood, cork and fabric-and featured the motto “REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE.” The motto letters were created by a talented team of artists and artisans, including Federico Cini, Sofia Caponi, Caterina Baragatti and others, while the overall structure was designed and built by Paola Dal Fior, Luigi Grimaldi and Federico Vichi.

During the week before ArtinBorgo Sunday, D’Annunzio Square was transformed into a true open-air workshop, where the work came to life under the curious eyes of visitors. The idea of the medieval crush was thus reinterpreted in a contemporary urban dimension, inspired by Alighiero Boetti’s tapestries and Paco Rabanne’s clothes.

The result was an extraordinary work, a supportive welcome tapestry that welcomed visitors at the main gate of the village, kicking off the magic of ArtinBorgo.

Supernova has produced Flash Mobs, workshops and many other initiatives to promote and enhance art. Take a look at their colorful website and have fun discovering what has already been accomplished.
