The medieval camp at the Rocca di Suvereto organised by the Knights of Ildebrandino

Suvereto is famous for its rich historical and architectural heritage, dating back to the medieval period. The village still retains many of its original features, with cobbled streets, ancient stone buildings, walls and towers that bear witness to its centuries-old history. There could therefore be no more evocative place to relive the customs and traditions of the Middle Ages. The ‘Knights of Ildebrandino’ group was founded in 2008 by a group of enthusiasts to celebrate Suvereto’s ancient past and promote chivalric culture through the practice of medieval fencing and historical re-enactment. The costumes worn are meticulously detailed and crafted following a careful study of the materials and styles of the period.

From this year onwards, everyone will have the chance to immerse themselves in the world and customs of the Middle Ages by visiting the knights’ camp, situated near the Rocca di Suvereto and open every weekend until September from 6.00 pm. It’s a different way to experience the village with children, with explanations from the Company’s knights and the chance to try on helmets, swords and knights’ cloaks. My children had a brilliant time; they dressed up as knights and peasants, saw how a fire is lit and learnt lots of new things about the Middle Ages and the life of knights.

Combat and re-enactments: medieval festivals

The Compagnia dei Cavalieri di Ildebrandino is also invited to take part in medieval events and festivals across Italy and Tuscany.

The combat re-enactments are both authentic and theatrical; whilst the aim is to create a spectacular display, the strikes are genuine full-contact blows, the result of studying and experimenting with fencing techniques found in ancient treatises such as the *Flos duellatorum* and Manuscript 1-33. Weapons used include one-handed swords, shields and bucklers, bastard swords, axes, lances, staffs,
torches and fire. Duels and battles are woven into short theatrical performances featuring nobles, knights, ladies, pilgrims, clerics, peasants and crusaders; scenes inspired by real historical events or by the fascinating and controversial world of the Middle Ages, rich in myths, legends, courtly love, fears and superstitions.
