Every October, the medieval village of Suvereto hosts Artimborgo, one of the most important cultural events dedicated to art and craftsmanship in Tuscany. Launched in 2018, this festival transforms the village streets into an open-air exhibition for a week, where artists and craftspeople display their creations and work live, engaging the public directly.
What is Artimborgo?
Artimborgo is a festival that focuses on artisanal creativity and sustainability. Every year, artists and craftspeople from all over Italy gather in Suvereto, one of Italy’s most beautiful villages, to create unique works and engage with the public. This event offers an opportunity to discover the work of local and international craftspeople and immerse yourself in the world of contemporary and traditional art. Here is the Artimborgo website.
The theme of sustainability at Artimborgo 2024
The 2024 edition of Artimborgo, under the artistic direction of Veronica Papi, focused on the theme of sustainability in art and craftsmanship. Artists and craftspeople explored creative reuse, transforming waste materials into unique works of art. The festival not only promotes creativity but also conveys a powerful message about the importance of recycling and respect for the environment.
An example of this vision was the installation ‘Rottami al Chiostro’ by artists Stefano Pilato and Andrea Locci, who created a large-scale sculpture using recycled materials. The work, illuminated by fluorescent colours, represents the convergence of the marine world and the world of science fiction, creating a truly evocative atmosphere.
The whole week features exhibitions, live workshops and opportunities for interaction, where artists and the public can engage in dialogue, creating an immersive experience. Artimborgo aims to put everyone – from artists to visitors – on an equal footing, transforming the village of Suvereto into a place of cultural exchange and interaction.
CountryDecor placemats, created for Artimborgo
Among the craftspeople present at Artimborgo 2024, I was there too, alongside Paola @nouveauxdecor, with our placemats, which were previewed for the occasion. Each placemat is hand-painted and hand-sewn, inspired by country style and designed to bring a touch of warmth to any table.
