An evocative name for a little corner of paradise on the slopes of the Baratti

You reach Buca delle Fate after a wonderful 25-minute walk through the Mediterranean scrub. A little corner of paradise where you can get back to nature at its wildest. The sea is perfect for snorkelling. We recommend visiting early in the morning or out of season, as it can get very busy in summer. There are no bars or places to eat, so make sure you take plenty of water with you before you set off!

To reach this bay, follow the signs for Populonia Alta and then, once you’ve passed the Gulf of Baratti, when the road begins to climb towards the headland, you’ll find a car park on your left. Leave your car there and you’ll find signs for the footpath. Take care at the first junction; you must follow trail number 301. The path continues slightly downhill, through myrtle and holm oak trees. You’ll also pass some Etruscan tombs, remnants of a civilisation that had an important settlement on the Baratti headland.
