Perhaps one of the most glamorous villages in the area, Bolgheri is famous for its wine and wineries, its chic restaurants and its trendy shops. The characteristic avenue of cypress trees leading up to the entrance to the village has become an iconic part of the Tuscan landscape, immortalised by Carducci:

Bolgheri is renowned worldwide for the wines produced within its territory and the immediate surrounding area, thanks to a sunny microclimate and the characteristics of the soil. The grape varieties grown in the area are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Most of the wines produced there bear the ‘Bolgheri DOC’ designation. Among these, the most famous are, above all, Sassicaia, Vermentino and Bolgheri Sauvignon. There is no shortage of white and rosé varieties, whilst a special mention goes to Masseto, considered one of the finest Italian wines and, at the same time, one of the most expensive on the market, with an average price per bottle exceeding 700 euros, although there have been record-breaking sales, such as a 15-litre bottle that was sold in 2007 for over 50,000 dollars. It is produced at the Ornellaia estate, owned by the Frescobaldi family.
