You can also reach the village on foot from Suvereto via a path that winds through the countryside and olive groves.
A day in Campiglia, amongst narrow lanes and breathtaking views
The historic centre is compact and easy to explore on foot. You don’t really need a map: just let the narrow streets guide you, as they open out onto small squares, panoramic views and medieval arches. Climbing up towards the Rocca takes you to the highest point of the village, from where the view stretches across the hills all the way to the sea. It’s one of those places where it’s worth stopping for a few minutes, simply to take in the scenery.
Campiglia’s history is linked to mining and metalworking, which you can explore just outside the village, in the San Silvestro Archaeological Mining Park. Here, you really do enter the heart of the earth: you can explore ancient tunnels, hop aboard a mining train and gain an understanding of just how much this industry has shaped the area over the centuries. It’s a very different experience from the usual visits to Tuscan villages, and that’s precisely why it’s so surprising.

A little-known fact: Campiglia is famous for ‘schiaccia campigliese’, a traditional sweet treat around which a wonderful annual festival is organised. In Campiglia, you’ll find numerous plaques bearing the image of swifts: this is because these migratory birds have chosen this very village as their nesting ground.
