An authentic culinary experience in Suvereto
Welcome to my column ‘Exploring the village’, where I take you on a journey to discover the hidden treasures of our wonderful region. Today I’d like to introduce you to a special place that embodies the tradition and authenticity of Tuscan cuisine: the family-run Il Caminetto restaurant, situated in the historic centre of Suvereto.
A bit of history
Il Caminetto is a family-run restaurant that has been delighting its guests’ palates with traditional Tuscan dishes for over forty years.
The premises, purchased by a young dreamer in 1982 with the intention of building a private home, were instead put to a different use because the atmosphere in the square deserved to be shared with a cosmopolitan crowd; and so a simple, welcoming setting was created, serving pizza and a few traditional dishes.
Fabrizio, Ilaria, Antonietta and Francesco are the owners of the restaurant, which we now consider part of the family. Just think – we spent the winter having lunch here every single time we came to Suvereto to carry on with the renovation work on our new home, La Terrazza sul Borgo.
I now know the menu off by heart, and that makes me feel right at home. Every dish is a sure-fire hit. What I always recommend to my guests is to try the pasta or the tortelli, homemade by Francesco. They can be served with mushrooms, butter or wild boar sauce. At Al Caminetto, you can also enjoy pizza, and the menu is simple and child-friendly, with plenty of options for children. My children, although still young, now often come to eat on their own in the restaurant; they know the menu by heart and feel right at home. Their favourite dishes? Pici with ragù, pasta alla carbonara, and the ‘Medievale’ pizza. Yes, because they also make pizza here in the evenings, and you can even order it to take away (perhaps to enjoy in the garden of the Casa nel Castello!).
